Although both are classified as fungi, Mold and Mildew are different in their appearance, characteristic and health effects.
Given the thriving condition of humidity and temperature, both can spread as quickly as 24-48 hours starting from small spores and spreading out. Although the entry of spores into living spaces and food is unavoidable, it is important to prevent the spreads of them keeping the household healthy and safe.
In early stages Mildew is typically white, grey or yellow and turns brown as it grows. It generally rests flat in a powdery look on surfaces of materials such as fabric, leather, paper and food that kept in moist and unaired condition. Mildew appears first as small dots and grows outward but stays mostly on the surface.
Mold’s color can range from green, red or black with a fuzzy appearance that can be mistaken with dirt. As Mildew grows on surfaces, mold tends to grow deeper into materials eating through its base and making it harder to be removed. Mold can also grow on food, fabric, paper as well as walls, floors and ceilings causing property damage and health concerns.
Although both Mold and Mildew affect your health, Mold can cause more sever allergic and asthma problems than Mildew. However if you find mildew on your food, you need to discard the whole batch and don’t suffice to only scarping off the surface. Mold on the other hand can even penetrate to deeper levels of food and other objects and therefore not only damaging the entire structure of houses, boats and even vehicles but causing long term health issues.
Since mildew is a surface fungus it can easily be treated with a store-bought disinfectant cleaners and a scrubbing brush. Mold, on the other hand, is often an indication of a larger issue that may require professional treatment.
