National Mesothelioma Awareness Day Is On Tuesday September 26, 2023

Mesothelioma, often known as "meso" or "meso cancer," is a kind of cancer caused solely by asbestos that attacks the smooth lining that surrounds and protects the lungs, heart, abdomen, and testicles. Mesothelial cells make up the layer of tissue that surrounds these organs, hence the term mesothelioma.

The condition is most frequently identified among employees in the construction and industrial sectors who have handled asbestos-containing materials. However it doesn’t occur only in workers but whoever had a single month's exposure can show symptoms 20-50 years later.

Sadly the presence of asbestos is still legal in the US despite the clear harm it does to employees and still used in over 3,000 commercially products.

Mesothelioma Awareness day was established by by Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation community members in 2004 and happens every year on September 26th. The Foundation has been the driving force behind the campaign to increase awareness and funds for this cancer.
